...in the JENNIFER BATES MEMORIAL GALLERY

Christopher Wilke

Spectres of the Id

Ongoing through May 25, 2008

“From early on I have been led to believe that I have a slightly skewed perspective of reality.  I don’t know if that’s true.  My solipsistic nature persuades me to believe that everyone sees old prude women and imagines them dancing in Hell, or imagines elephants used in primitive pageantry draped with fascist banners anytime the word “patriotism” confronts them.  Am I the only one that thinks a human smile looks defensive, in the same way a dog looks when it’s kicked?  I doubt it.  I have to doubt it…. When I retreat to my humble abode and paint I find that a wave of relief washes over me.  The stress of conformity drifts away, the stress of required responses and greetings... here in my world, I see form as subservient to content, and function is King.  As masturbation, the function is therapeutic.  As sex, the function is hypnotism.  I need to make others see how I see.  And I think they do, and we all think we’re the only ones, trying to banish what others would call bizarre or evil from our thoughts.  And we walk along the streets and show our teeth to our neighbors and use the shield of program like a condom for interaction.”  -- Christopher Wilke

Martha Knox

Humanist Association of Greater Philadephia

Would you check "nonreligious", "atheist" or "agnostic" on religious surveys? Are you passionate about science and skepticism? Are you interested in Unitarian Universalism or Quakerism for their ethical values, but turned off by the supernaturalism that come with them? If your answers are yes, you're a Humanist!

Martha Knox, Celebrant and VP of the Humanist Association of Greater Philadelphia gives an interactive talk about organized, philosophical Humanism, which is both a global movement and network of local communities.

DEATH OF THE NATION STATE

Radical Traditionalism and the Neo-Tribalilst Alternative

hosted by Bood Samel and Jason Lawrence

We live in an age where notions of secular apocalypse are no longer a quiet paranoia exclusive to those of us who hang out at gun shows and conspiracy bookstores.  Pre-millennial memories of Bo Gritz  burning a U.N. flag at “The Survivalist Expo” seem almost quaint in these days post 9/11, post Patriot Act and, in many ways, post-everything-life-as-we-knew-it.

To paraphrase Spengler (poorly), civilization (as opposed to culture) is in fact the last stage of something quite organic in nature.  If one stresses this metaphor to the breaking point, we can only expect that bad diet and lack of exercise will lead our current organism to a swift but awfully painful death.  And You live in Philadelphia; things will get ugly and things will get ugly very quickly.  Well, they kind of have already.

For those of you who see no dignity in going down with the shit, Jason Lawrence and Bood Samel  present one alternative that derives its inspiration from the past—a distant pre-Christian past where mysticism dwelt beyond the sunny epithets of the Church and the Bank and the Marketplace.   Though particularly relevant today, their message offers good advice for healthy, positive living at any level of societal degeneration.

Topics include:  contemporary and historical antecedents to the coming age, the gathering of the tribe, and defense of the self and the group.
